Plastic planet

Plastic was our big topic in the fourth grade. Pupils could choose an environmental topic which is important to them (plastic, rainforest, fast fashion …). Pupils created posters and presented presentations in class.

Here are some facts about plastic

Did you know that:

? Marine litter is one of the fastest growing threats to the health of

the world’s oceans.

? Plastic which we use for a minute or two, joins the water wave and

needs decades to break down (water bottle up to 500 years), much

of it joins the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

? By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

? Plastic, which we throw away everyday, enters the food chain and

possibly our bodies.

? More plastic was manufactured in the last 10 years than all of the

last century.

What can you do to avoid plastic:

1. Refuse plastic bags in supermarkets and clothes stores.

2. Don’t buy plastic bottles – up to 5000 years to rot.

3. Don’t wrap your bread in an aluminium foil and then put it in a

reusable eating utensil.

4. Don’t buy food in plastic boxes e.g. already cutted pieces of fruit in

a plastic box. Make easy meals form unprocessed & unpacked

foods.

5. Don’t buy food to go.

6. Don’t buy fast fashion. In many clothes factories the workers don’t

get paid well.

7. Refuse for e.g. plastic items you get for free. Ask yourself: Do I

really need this.

8. Reuse: reusable bags, water bottles, …
